The California State University has discovered that the personal details of 59,000 "affiliates" of the university have been gained by hackers. The university discovered the attacks during routine monitoring of its networks. It would appear that victims' names, including Social Security numbers were accessed after the attackers had first placed software on the system. Joe Wills, a spokesman for the university, had this to say:
"We still have no indication that the information was used for anything other than somebody wanting to have illegal access to this server,'' Wills said. "Typically, on a college campus that can be to download files, music and games. There's still no indication they were looking to take personal information.''
This is not the first time that a university has been targeted - last year the University of California's (San Diego) computer system was compromised.
